By Tomas Toto

Is it possible that you have put usability mistakes into the design of your business website - without realizing it?

Avoiding friends on your website is something that you should do in 2012, and beyond. They simply don't work anymore. The reason you don't want to use them is they affect search bots, which can affect your ranking in the search engines in many ways. If you want to have people bookmark your site and share it with others, frames need to be avoided. They won't be able to print your page either which is something that frames also prevents. If you have frames, and people use your links, they won't change colors, which can make navigation difficult. Using frames can really inhibit the usability of your website in these ways. Your only choice might be to re-code the frames on your site if you need to have them or cannot get rid of them.

There's nothing new about using keywords in your alt text, but the real reason is it should be a description for people with sight problems. Although that's what many site owners do especially if they're using SEO, but even today, in 2012, there are millions of people using dial-up internet connections. What you also need to make allowances for are slow connections, and this could have some impact for them. The disabling of pictures is done so the connection speeds up, and there are still a lot of people with slow connectivity.

Just like your main site, your mobile site needs to be optimized for optimal usability. You have to know how to optimize your mobile site. Mobile web surfing is increasing which can make you money. It is imperative that your mobile site looks just like your main site. So much is removed from the mobile site in most cases it doesn't look like the main site at all. If your mobile site is a gateway to your main site, they have to look the same, or people won't be able to recognize it. So when you look at a page on your website with a smart phone, and it doesn't convert well on a mobile browser, fix it immediately! Your viewers will be disappointed if you use pages that do not convert well to a mobile format, so avoid using them when making your mobile site.

Usability mistakes, especially in regard to preferences that people have when making websites, may not all be resolvable. External changes and influences, specifically in regard to the web, will influence usability problems over time. Being aware of changes in the Internet will help you remain aware of what is going on.
