Search Engine Optimisation Versus Pay Per Click Versus Social Media - Which Method Do I Invest In?

By Susie Hogan

It is a real challenge for any company competing on the net. There are billions of websites listed in Google alone. All these websites are potential competitors. So how can your website stand out from the rest? A good SEO company will be able to help with SEO services but what about the rest?

The way we do business has very recently completely changed. If we go back a short while ago, people still worked on traditional forms to choose their company. Either that or they could simply walk up the high street, and have all the shop fronts to choose from. The Internet has spun buying habits on its head. If you can't wait for next day delivery, you do still have the shops. However they aren't used as much as they were. Now business have to pick from an SEO company, a social media agency or a company to manage an Adwords campaign.

Internet marketers tend to pick and specialise in one of the three. There are those companies that specialise in all areas, but they are few and far between. So let's look at each method and their strengths and weaknesses.

Search engine optimisation is the holy grail of the internet marketer. When you type a keyphrase into Google, you are offered two different sets of results. Paid advertisements feature on the right hand side. In the middle are what is known as organic results. The organic results are unpaid, and are what Google considers most relevant. Imagine being able to appear at the top of these listings. Even better, what if you could appear in the top three results? Being able to do so can bring in masses of potential customers and is why a good SEO company is worth its weight in gold. SEO uses a number of different tweaks and methods. First you have onsite optimisation which involves getting the title tags and body content just right, amongst other tweaks you can make. Secondly a good SEO company will be very good at link building. Link building involves sending backlinks to your website from others. It is in a nutshell, when website X links to you. What about the disadvantages with SEO? But what about the disadvantages involved with SEO marketing? It is hard to find fault, as if you find the right SEO company, you can reap the rewards. One disadvantage even with the best companies is that Google can be unpredictable. A method that was successful can soon stop working. However, there are many different methods which a good SEO company will keep on top with.

If patience and time isn't on your side, you might consider pay per click advertising. Pay per click allows you to bid to appear on the right hand side of the results. To an extent, you can therefore choose where you appear. A well written advert will get plenty of clicks. You aren't able to control what appears with organic results. Secondly, PPC is instant. With adwords for example you can setup an account and be active literally within the hour. Search engine optimisation takes months to get top rankings, and even then you have no guarantees. With the pay per click model you can pay your way to the top instantly. On the other hand a good Adwords management company will be able to optimise your campaign to get your money's worth. However Adwords really is for the big boys and you can end up bidding for more than the product is worth if you aren't careful. A good SEO company can be hired at a fraction of the price.

You have probably heard of social media, and if you haven't come across Facebook you cannot read the papers or watch the news!If you use the Internet regularly, or even just watch the TV, you have to have come across social media. The main two social networking websites are Facebook and Twitter, which are used by just about everyone. Who's parents or grand parents don't use Facebook these days?! More and more companies are using social media to reach their customers. Social media is a very different form of advertising, as it is much more subtle. With social media the worse thing a company can do is constantly post offers and try and push their product or service. Social media is all about spreading the word through making fans. A good social media company can definitely help you with this form of advertising, but do be aware it is very different to traditional forms.
