Home Warranties - What Are the Options?

By Allen Whinters

So many people these days are purchasing home appliance insurance so they don't have to shell out several thousand dollars to repair a broken system or appliance. The problem with most people is the fact that they just don't understand how the different systems in the home are covered. So what type of coverage do you need? There are different options that meet just about anybody's budget so you just can't go wrong.

So what are the basic options?

For most people, the first plan that they purchase will be a plan that covers most of the appliances and systems in their home. But remember, these programs will usually not cover a blender that goes bad, but they cover things like dishwashers.

Plans and programs come in all different shapes and sizes. Small plans to cover appliances and larger plans to cover the more complicated systems like a central vacuuming unit can be purchased. For the most part, you will have no trouble finding something that will be satisfactory.

What all is covered by home warranty protection plans?

Basically the things that are not covered are pre-existing conditions. Basically if there was a problem with your air conditioner before you bought your warranty, then that item will not be covered. Another common thing that happens is lack of maintenance or abuse. For example, if you do not change out the air filters on your air handler, then that will probably not be covered.

What is the problem with being over insured?

Have you purchased and extended warranty on any of your appliances? This is something that happens to many home owners. If you have an extended warranty on some items you should not purchase an insurance policy that covers it also. This is a waste of resources that most young home owners just can't afford to make. Over insuring yourself could cost you hundreds of dollars each year.
