What Flowers Mean To People

By Florian Coleman

The language of flowers is understood by all. Flowers are used by people of different societies to express many feelings like love, happiness, sympathy, and apology. They offer an easy and classy way of expressing feelings when words fail us. But all flowers do not mean the same thing. Messages change from flower to flower, and you should know what meaning a flower conveys before you give it to others.

The system of assigning meanings to flowers is termed as floriography. It is a well known custom in European nations to think about the message of flowers and the event before presenting flowers of a certain kind.

Red roses are accepted expressions of love and passion, whereas, white roses denote purity and pink ones denote lasting friendship. Presenting white tulips is the best way to win over a friend you have fallen out with, as tulips symbolize forgiveness. Lilies when gifted are generally associated with royalty, celebration, excitement and zeal. Your ailing friend will like a 'get well soon' wish with a bunch of Yarrow, while for a friend who is starting on a new venture a bouquet of Azalea will communicate your wish for his success. Some flowers can also have a negative message. For instance, lavender blossoms generally stand for lurking suspicion.

There are especially a lot of flowers for lovers to select from, each conveying a unique mood or feeling. Flowers like Apple Blossoms and yellow Chrysanthemums express subtle sentiments in love.

There is another important aspect to be considered before giving flowers as gifts. Different traditions have attributed different meanings to flowers. If your loved one belongs to another country or follows a different tradition, you need to make sure that the message that you wish to convey through flowers is consistent with what those flowers convey in that culture. This is important as you would surely not want your gift to evoke an entirely unexpected reaction from the recipient.
