Is it Really That Easy to Get Started With EBay?

By Marsh Whitley

Home business is booming, and many people are getting their first taste of business on eBay; why is this a good idea?. First, it is a great testing ground for trying your hand at selling; second, there is practically no risk to you; and third, you have a chance to feel what it's like to earn a little business income. Still, before you jump in, there are a few points you should be aware of, and in this article I'll try to point those out.

First, take time to consider what product line you want to sell--if you don't know, don't worry as I'll talk about that; it is enough that you are simply excited about selling on eBay. EBay is great for selling almost any product, but if you are going into business, it is normally considered standard practice to confine your selling to a particular niche; not that you can't expand from their or switch niches entirely later on. You can always add different product lines, but start out in just one area to begin with. What you have to gain from this is customer loyalty and trust as buyers enjoyed their auction experience with you will come back. Again, this is important because people will show their loyalty to you by spending money on your auctions--if people like the collectible super heroes you sell, believe me, word will spread to other collectors in your niche.

Determining what to sell is often as easy as asking yourself what it is that you know about, and that is actually standard advice given to beginners. However, I would take that with a grain of salt. That can be one approach, but really, that can be easier said than done. But what if you can't? Well, many people start with an interest and pursue that to the point where it leads to saleable eBay product. Even if you don't know very much about the products, if you are interested, you will be able to learn enough to sell them convincingly on eBay.

If you are not particularly interested in anything and not willing to be interested, then selling on eBay may not be the right choice for you. For inspiration, you can make a list of the kinds of things you like, visit stores and websites, and talk to friends and family. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas, don't worry; as I mentioned a moment ago, in the beginning it is enough to be interested, and that's why my standard advice at this point is just to sell other peoples' stuff--sell their junk. Don't worry about it not selling--anything will sell on eBay, and in the beginning it does not really matter if you make a profit or not--you probably will, and I think you will be surprised at how well you do with what you had thought was just junk. After you have a few auctions and sales under your belt, you may have a more focused idea of what you want to sell.

When you get to the point of thinking about business and profit, you will, of course, want to consider products that have a reasonable chance of selling consistently well. It is not necessary that you focus on items with wide public recognition. EBay is the world's largest flea market and as such, there is a market for nearly everything. Keep in mind that eBay is great market place for collectors--so there is a market for obscure items, and eBay is the perfect place to sell them.

If you find that you like selling and start making money, you need to know that if you are in the United States, you will have to declare it as income. If you think that you are going to sell on a regular basis, then it would probably be a good idea to get a sales tax permit. When you sell retail items to residents of the state in which you live, you need to add sales tax to those items, and then you pay the tax to your state treasury at tax collection time. This is not complicated, and you can find out more information from your department of revenue.

Keep in mind that there are good days and bad days on eBay. Everyone has them. No one's auctions score 100% of the time. Not giving up is the real key to success on eBay as it is with any business. Anyone with determination can make a living on eBay, and there is hardly anything that can't be sold. Although eBay will not work out for everyone who tries to give it a go, it is one of the most accessible means of starting out in business for yourself available, and best of all, you risk practically nothing in giving it a try. The next step is to take action--you could have an auction up today!
