Picking out a Woman's Fancy Dress Costume

By Patricia J. Pollock

So you've been invited to a party, and the invitations reads "fancy dress" Sure it's always a laugh isn't it? So you go to your local party shop or start to browse online, and as you flip through pages of fancy dress choices, you start to notice a common denominator to all the choices for women.....which is...sexy. Ok...so it's a laugh and and all, but why?? Why are all the fancy dress choices for women nothing more but "sexy" versions of a character?

Some ideas never grow old. One finds usually front and centre the blatantly sexually themed fancy dress costumes like "play boy bunny", as well as the sexualized version of day to day characters like "sexy policewoman", "sexy schoolgirl" and "sexy nurse".

Looking under "Fairy Tale Characters" one expects a break from this trend and hopes for a more traditional costume. There are a handful of traditional "princess" gowns, but again, innocent characters from storybooks like "Alice in Wonderland" and "Dorothy" and feature as fancy dress costumes with plunging necklines and suspender like stockings. For a pirate themed party, you will be sure to find a female fancy dress costume will be titled something like "sexy Victorian pirate" complete with short skirt which would not seem Victorian.

One goes to the "animal" fancy dress costume section, only to then find "sexy cat" "sexy mouse" etc. There are a few full animal costumes but it would seem they have male models inside them given their size.

If you are a man looking for a fancy dress costume, there is much more choice for you. There is a wide assortment of fancy dress costumes available from science fiction characters to historical figures, full suits of armour, and humour ones as well. There are few fancy costumes that depict men as sexual objects unless you count crass ones catering to boy's humour suitable for a stag do.

So for a woman, unless you want to be a princess, or a Lord of the Rings elf, you will find it difficult to find a fancy dress costume that does not try an persuade you to tart up for the evening.
