Common Characteristics of an Entrepreneur

By Robert Giles

Regardless of your definition of success, there are a number of features shared by triumphant business-people. Not all come naturally. Most are learned with practise and by developing a winning-attitude. There are many such characteristics, but what this article aims to do is whittle them down to the top twelve most recognisable when it comes to 'going it alone'.

Do What You Enjoy. What you get out of your business in the sense of personal satisfaction, financial stability and overall gain reflects what you put in. You really must enjoy what you do, otherwise there is no point doing it.

Take it Seriously. You have to take what you do seriously and believe in every aspect of your business. Many family members and friends will try and put you down, but stay focussed and motivated. Everyone must start from somewhere.

Planning is so important when it comes to working at home, especially as it is often an aspect that falls to the wayside. It really helps you to analyse each business situation and make conclusions based on your research.

Self-promote. Don't be shy: you have to self-promote now more than ever. All you have to rely on is yourself so go out there and make a name, get involved, and be remembered for all the right reasons.

Be Wise with Money. Make sure you're fully aware of your sales, your costs and your profit. It is easy to forget about costs, but in this game it is important you know them on a daily basis.

The Customer Is Still Always Right. Yes, this age-old saying still applies, now more than ever! In fact, your business should always be about your customers, or clients, period. After all, your customers are the ones who ultimately decide whether your business fails or succeeds.

Create A Competitive Advantage. You need an advantage (a unique selling proposition) that helps you to stand out from the crowd. What is it that will make people choose to do business with you?

Invest In Yourself. Take time to buy and read business and marketing books, magazines, journals, newsletters and websites: utilising these resources will enhance your business knowledge.

Get Involved. 'Network' and get involved with local events. It's a fact that people like to do business with people they know, like, and respect.

Carefully arrange and design your workspace to ensure you work to your optimum level every day.

Take A Break! It's very easy when you work from home to get carried away, but you must take regular breaks and remember to spend time with your family out-of-hours.

Follow-up everything. It's undemanding to sell one product or service, but it takes a lot of hard work and determination to retain customers and keep them coming back for more. Ensure that you follow-up everything so nothing falls under the radar. So many people don't realise that the best business is the business sat right under their nose.

If you are interested in becoming your very own entrepreneur then you can always attend one of the many special events put on up and down the country, led by industry-experts. A recent event was held at private member's club, Home House, of Portman Square in London, which was presented by the much loved Australian Dragon, Richard Farleigh.
