The Basics Of Search Engine Optimization

By Takara Alexis

Search engine optimization is important if you want your website to grow and compete with other websites that deal with similar content. If you are not on the first page of search results for keywords related to your website's topic you will struggle to get traffic to your website.

The first important part of search engine optimization is to make sure your page gets indexed. "Spiders" crawl the web looking for new websites to add to the search engine database and if they are unable to find your website you won't show up in the search results at all. Avoid links with JavaScript as the "spiders" won't even be able to see these links. It is also important to not have any dangling links; every page should link to at least one other page. "Spiders" are also unable to read text created in flash so you need to make sure you have actual text on your website that the "spiders" are able to find.

You also want to work the main keywords you want to rank for into the titles of your pages. For example, if you run a website about motorcycles you definitely want the word "motorcycle" to be in the headings on your website. It's also important to use your keywords in the text on your website, however don't overdue it as this can lead to your page being marked as spam.

You also want as many sites as possible to link back to you site. Google views the number of links going to a particular website as important in determining how to rank the website and figuring out where to place it in the search results. A good method for achieving this is to build a triangle of links where website A links to website B which links to website C and website C links back to website A. This will help raise the Google PageRank of your website.

When beginning search engine optimization you have to make sure you are pursuing it in the right way. If your practices for raising your PageRank done through the use of deception you will eventually be caught and banned from the search directories. This is the last thing you want if you are trying to build a successful website so it is important that you engage in the proper methods for getting on the first page of the search results.

Search engine optimization is a time consuming process that needs to be done as much as possible. As soon as you slack off on your SEO you will begin to lose ground to your competitors. Remember to always be working at optimizing your website and to do so in an ethical and fair way.
