Do The Improvements In Win7 Make It Much Better Than Vista?

By Rhonda Keller

When Microsoft first introduced the Vista operating system they made quite a stir. Those of us that had been using XP really liked it, for the most part, and as we changed over to the new Vista we were not happy. Too much of a change in some areas that made us have to learn how to do some things over again and it just moved too slowly many times.

When Vista was launched you could not mix Vista and the older XP on the same network. I remember having an impossible situation with one network on a static IP. The Vista workstations would not function with the server and patches from Windows for this very popular bookkeeping software was not yet available. It was best to not mix these systems and many companies stayed with XP and waited to upgrade.

With the rumor of the Windows 7 OS came a sigh of relief around the IT world. Now that we have had some time to use this new system how are they comparing. And is Win7 as good as the old XP?

The advantage that Vista did have over XP was in the speed area and the ability to work with the faster, more complex computer processors being used today. The gaming industry had been pleased with the performance that they could get from Vista. The biggest problem was in software compatibility and plain old user friendliness. The Windows 7 system has combined the best of both.

Vista users have complained some about having to re-learn, again, some of the everyday functions. But that was short lived. It is much easier, for most of us, to go to Windows 7 from Vista than it was from XP to Vista. The changes make more sense and I am happy to be back to the XP type functionality.

Can you change your Vista computer to Windows 7? Check first because some cannot. What you get with the new operating system is faster startup, which was very slow with Vista, and faster general operations. But this is really only true for the upper end, high performance PC. Our normal office and home computers will show very little change.
