Dog Training - Does Your Puppy Do This? (Pulling and Tugging at the Leash)

By Billie Johnson

Another behavior problem that doesn't look like a problem is pulling and tugging the leash. Many dogs have developed this habit and has carried this all throughout their lives because their owners even play with them. They like playing tug of war with their dogs with the leash. There are some who even get a rope that looks like a leash for the purpose of playing with the dogs.

If in case you realize that the pulling and the tugging of the leash has to stop, you can always purchase a quality body harness. Then, they won't have anything to pull with their mouths since the design of the body leash is totally different. You can just lure your puppy by using a toy for him to walk by your side. Let's admit it, the typical leash makes it easier for your puppy to walk with you while the body leash isn't the easiest tool to use when walking together with your dog. You can also use a good training collar or a choke chain, be sure that the size just fits or else your dog might be hurt or if it is loose, he might escape.

Remember than when you are walking with your puppy, always keep the leash loose always. when the puppy begins to pull ahead of you, then just change direction so that the puppy will think that it is falling behind; make it seem that he's the one who needs to catch up with you. It is essential to do this because if the puppy reaches the end of the leash, then he will realize that he can escape from you. It only takes a split second for you to change directions. Don't let your puppy outwit you.

Be the leader. That is what the leash training of your puppy must point at. Your puppy must think that even when walking outside of the house, he is to follow you wherever you go. You are the alpha dog, and they should follow obediently around.

It is important not to yank or pull on the puppy's neck when correcting him. A gentle, steady pressure will work much better than a hard yank. The best strategy is to use the least amount of pressure possible to achieve the desired result.
