Basic Concepts Of Interior Design

By Kenneth Hilton

In the interior design of any structure, there are many key factors that must be kept in mind. Strict adherence to the guidelines mentioned below will assist in dealing with most of these aspects. All of them play a significant role in the appeal of a place, though they may be used in different ways in various situations.

Unity: As per this, the whole space must be considered as a single unit, which has been separated through walls, and this must be taken into account while designing the interiors of the place, which therefore must have some consistency. The central theme should always be kept in view.

Balance: This deals with the most appropriate spread of different items in an area. Objects which have similar visual appeal should be put at different locations in the room to strike a balance along a predetermined axis. There are three kinds of balance. The first is symmetrical, which is the most conventional, and the simplest to attain. The second is asymmetrical, which needs a great deal of imagination, but is increasingly popular. The third type of balance is radial, where you choose a proper centre and position objects relative to it.

Proportion: This is essentially to do with the dimensions and proportions of the objects. It is crucial that items in a room go well together in terms of their sizes. The absence of proportionality will make some pieces of furniture stand out, while some others will be subdued, which will significantly hamper the overall attractiveness of the room.

Focus: Having a focus in a room is evidence of good interior design. Focal objects can be anything ranging from a furniture item to an attractive painting or some other artistic piece. The object must be such that it is important in the overall design of the room and is able to attract the attention of the observer. While it should be unique, it must blend with its surroundings.

Rhythm: This is again an essential factor of good interior design. This implies that the design should give a feeling of continuity and structure. Using many arcs, ornate walls or ceilings, decorative fixtures at carefully chosen distances, alternate colours etc can help attain a perceptible rhythm.

Keeping these guidelines in mind will help in effective and attractive interior designing of your home. It is recommended to engage a good interior design professional who can take care of all these factors and also assist you with the details.
