Author John Maxwell, in his book, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, talks about the Law of the Ladder. As a fitness professional, I see how this law is very important in helping other fitness professionals grow their businesses. Many times, I see trainers err by concentrating on things like new equipment or new certifications rather than working on their own business skills.
Often times, trainers spend most of their time working on their training skills (I did this too when I first started out). If you work for someone else and do not own your own business, this is fine. But if you are in business for yourself, you are making a mistake.
So, how can you sidestep this recipe for low pay, endless hours on the training floor, and missed moments with your family in life? You learn to apply the Law of the Ladder to your business. Assess where you have put most of your focus up until this point in your career? Has it been on improving your technical skills, your nutrition skills, your marketing, business development or leadership? Here are some ways for you to do that quickly.
Think about how much money you have spent over the last twelve months on equipment and certifications and stack that up against the money you have spent on personal growth and learning more about business. What do the numbers tell you when you calculate your return on investment?
After you run the numbers, if you do not like the results, it may indicate that you are focusing too strongly on the wrong parts of your business. You may be spending too much effort on products and features that do not really help you to grow as a business owner and a marketer.
Decide not to change your trajectory. Think about how you can invest more in learning to be a great business owner. Think about how to grow personally and find some mastermind groups to join. This is a great way to increase your bottom line!
