The ancient Egyptians started a tradition over 5,000 years ago where you gave your loved one a ring. This is why men have to spend time looking at loads of diamond rings. This is to find the perfect one to give to their girlfriend to signify a proposal of marriage. The ring is meant to symbolize never ending love.

There are two very important factors to consider before you do actually by the engagement ring. One is how much you are going to pay for it, and what style of ring does she prefer. As for how much you are going to pay, a general rule of thumb is that it should cost in the region of two months salary. But you must be realistic about this or you could end up in a lot of trouble.

Even when you are in love you do still have to pay all your other bills, so being able to put away that kind of money could take a very long time. It might be an idea if you looked into buying the ring using a finance credit agreement. The easiest way to find out if it is possible, is visit the jewelry store and see if they do have a payment scheme in place.

By going through their credit check, you will have some idea on how much it is all going to cost, and the type of engagement ring you can afford. But you will still have to make an initial payment.

Now, ask someone you know you can trust, maybe your mother or sister, or a close friend of your future fiancee, to go shopping with her, making sure that they spend a lot of time looking at engagement rings. Then get them to report back on the type of ring she prefers. But to be safe, make sure that the jewelry store will let you return the ring, or allow your girlfriend to exchange it for another, just in case.

People in love have been known to do some very stupid things, especially men, when it comes to visiting jewelers to buy rings. He is likely to spending far too much in an attempt to buy the ideal engagement ring. But, when the ring is on her finger, how much it cost is of no concern to her.
