A Very Basic Guide to Social Media Marketing

By Eileen McGovern

Congratulations! You've taken the first step and decided to begin your social media marketing program. You are joining the 21st century's great marketing medium. Now what? How do you get started? How do you start creating an online customer base? Here are a few tips to help you on your way.

Create interesting content. You may need to engage the help of a social media marketing company to help you with this. You want to produce content that will both attract people and compel them to return to your page. The content needs to be flashy and bright but also don't waste people's time. You need to clearly explain what your company is about.

Build a customer base. How do you do this? Ask your existing customers to like your page. Ask your friends to like your page. Join groups that have similar interests to your firm. One proven way to build up a customer base is to sponsor a contest. You can create weekly or monthly giveaways as a way to create exposure for new customers.

Get a Twitter for business. Separate from your personal Twitter account, you can use this Twitter to post quick updates and pictures from your office. Be careful and responsible for what you post though. You can post photos from a company outing but posting pictures of co-workers passed out drunk following holiday parties may not exactly inspire confidence among probable customers. If you run a company that produces seasonal items, see if there is a way that you can show off those items as the season changes. Always make sure that you provide a link back to your website. If the customer happens to wander to your Twitter, you want them togo to your website as well.

The most important thing to remember with your new social media marketing campaign is to remain patient. Success will not occur overnight. You must remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Address your customers' complaints or having a Facebook page is a waste. Tweet often or having a Twitter for business is pointless. There are Twitter accounts with only a smattering of Tweets. What is the point? You need to take care of your social media sites and hopefully you will reap wonderful benefits from it.
