Networking is very much like any other area of study. If you want to master it and learn it with excellence, you must learn the rules or the fundamentals that go along with it. Some people may thing that the fundamentals of networking are obvious, but even so, it is important to dig into them and learn them well so that you can be successful. Let's go over some of the networking fundamentals.
Relationships. Relationships are the backbone of your successful networking endeavors. After all, networking involves the practice of creating beneficial relationships with others. You have a choice. You can build relationships with people who will help you in your business or you can build relationships with people who will harm you in your business. Choose wisely.
Diversity: Fill your life with outstanding network members who come from diverse areas of expertise that differ from and complement your skills. Think of them as your support team, a blend and mix of talents, ages, backgrounds and more. This strategy allows you to gain new perspectives and exposure to ideas that broaden your life.
Reciprocity: One of the foundations of strong societies is the fact that they are built upon the strong foundation of mutual giving and receiving. No society will exist for long if its members refuse to help one another and contribute to the well-being of others.
In networking, reciprocating, returning favors, and giving back are not merely expected: they're demanded. It's the price you pay to be a member with high caliber individuals looking to serve one another. As a general rule, if you are prepared to give at least two or three times for every one time you receive, you are going to master serving the network and the "abundance juice," as my mentor Jeff Walker calls it, will always find a way to fill your cup.
Trust: this one goes without saying, but you must be able to trust your networking partners, and they must be able to trust you. Work hard to build mutually trusting relationships with all of the contacts within your network, and you will see the speed of your success pick up!
